Heartbreakers Open the Season Against Blue Roos with 14-10 Win
The Nashville Kangaroos gathered at club sponsor Velocity Sports Performance in Murfreesboro, TN to launch the 2009 Winter Season of Netball. Playing indoors in the winter is certainly better than playing outdoors with the weather threatening to snow!
Head Coach Moreen Logsdon rallied the troops through pre-game warm ups and then named the teams. With several Roo faithful to cheer the combatants on (not to mention run the scorer's table and take a few pictures), the season began with the Blue Roos winning the coing toss, giving them first posession. This season sees several new joeys joining the Kangaroos family, including some with netball experience and a some who are playing in their first game ever.
The Blue Roos wasted no time in getting on the score board, with Taijana Logsdon scoring the first goal of the season (over Mom!). The first half continued to be a tight affair. Several key matchups played out unexpectedly as joey Bina Patel was able to score seeming at will in the seeming mismatch against Alan Denton (pictured). Alan was able to counter those scoring strikes on the other end however, thanks to another joey Nicia Behary feeding some excellent entry passes to him. At the half time break, the heartbreakers had a slim lead of 7-5.
Playing a shortened game due to time constraints, the Blue Roos had a bit of an uphill battle and their Center Dee Patel ran herself to near exhaustion creating space and moving the ball to her shooters. However, thanks to first-gamer Chelsea (who only came to see Taijana play, but then joined in the fun), who fed several consecutive passes to shooting ace Bina, the Heartbreakers, opened up the lead as time wound down. The Blue Roos fought back to score the final two baskets, but it was not enough, and the Heartbreakers took Game 1, 14-10.
Game 2 is set for next Sunday, January 25th, with tip off at 4 pm, at the Murfreesboro Velocity Sports Performance facility. Come on out and join the fun.
