Kangaroos Crown New Champion at 2009 Zoo Run
After a successful experience in 2008, the Nashville Kangaroos participated in the 2009 Nashville Zoo Run Run 5K for a second time on Saturday, January 24. The Roos sponsored the event, which got the Roo logo on the race shirts, and we gained some great publicity with our banner, information booth, runners and volunteers.
Zoo representatives were impressed with the Nashville Kangaroos participation. "It's great to have the Nashville Kangaroos back for a second year," said Zoo representative JD Frattini. The Nashville Kangaroos participants were equally delighted with the most fun race in Middle Tennessee.
After running thousands of miles in training specifically to beat Jeff "Peeps" Persson's 2008 time of 25:12, Evan "Colonel" Ling took a shortcut through the African Wild Dogs enclosure to finish with a Roo-Best time of 24:35. The "Blue Flyer" award goes to Debbie Warner, who was again the first female Roo over the finish line. Recently recovered from injury, "Peeps" managed a respectable time in his first run since Nationals. Raechel "Woozy" Bowersox flashed by the finish line so quickly that the Roo photographer only managed to capture her tail end and had to ask her to pose for a retake!
Special thanks go to our volunteers who were out in the icy weather for several hours doing an incredible job of representing the Nashville Kangaroos: Australian Abroad Ambassador Teri Izquierdo, Clan Wheatley (Matt, Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley), Jesse Wells, Marty Thompson, Michelle Lee and her son Michael, and Bridget Galvin.
