Blue Roos Take Game 2 to Even Series with Heartbreakers 1-1
This week's matchup between the Heartbreakers and the Blue Roos had plenty of questions to be answered, but before the game even got underway, the team owners were wheeling and dealing. Based on their loss in Game 1 last week, The Blue Roos drafted first, selecting newcomer Anand Patel hoping to bolster their strength in the backline. The Heartbreakers were then able to draft fellow newcomer Pratik "Teek" Bhikha, hoping his size might provide counterbalance to the Man-Mountain goal attack Alan Denton.
All seemed equitable until Head Coach Moreen Logsdon's sister Christine appeared on the roster for the Blue Roos. Christine is visiting our fine state of Tennessee and was only too happy to be facing her sister in a game of netball. That meant the Blue Roos had to put Nicia Behary on waivers. Only too happy to claim her off the waiver wire, the Heartbreakers did just that.
Once all the polical maneuvering was over, the teams faced each other for the second matchup of this Winter Season. The first quarter was quite a battle as both teams were trying to get used to their new teammates. Rookie Nicia Behary, determined to show the Blue Roos they made a mistake putting her on waivers scored two early baskets. Not to be outdone, the Blue Roos countered with their own goal shooters Alan Denton and Bina Patel to take the lead at the first intermission 5-4.
In the second period, the Heartbreakers turned up the heat with Moreen Logsdon leading from the goal defense position to Teek Bhikha through the middle and up to shooting ace Dee Patel. She rained buckets for the Hearbreakers who were able to take back the lead at the big break, 9-8.
In the third period, Christine found her feet (having just arrived from Australia, she must have been a bit tired) and used her abundant talent, and her height, as goal keeper to shut down the Heartbreakers offense. She then started break out after breakout, continually finding Anand Patel and Taijana Logsdon in the open court. Alan Denton apparently could not miss, and rocketed the Blue Roos back into the lead at the thrid break, 14-12.
With obvious bragging rights on the line, the two teams battled back and forth for the entire 10 minutes of the final quarter, neither team able to break the game open. As the final horn sounded, the Blue Roos were celebrating and high-fiving their first win of the series, having downed the Heartbreakers 19-16 and evened the series at 1-1.
The next game was originally scheduled for February 1, but due to some other minor sport having its world championship (we think it is called The Super Bowl?), the two teams will reconvene their series on February 8. The match will be at 4 pm at the Murfreesboro Velocity Sports Performance facility.
