After a long cold winter, finally some signs of spring have sprung as the 2009 season is now fast approaching. With just three weeks before the season opener with the Baton Rouge Tigers, the Kangaroos team gathered for the 2009 Recruitment Day. The veterans were joined by ten new recruits in Elmington Park and the 50 or so fans were treated not only to a gorgeous day in the park with the temperature approaching 80 degrees, but a fun exhibition match of footy.

After the team ran through a number of drills designed to help the veterans shake off the rust, and to help the new recruits learn the basic skills, the boys were divided into teams for the Exhibition Match of two fifteen minute halves. The first half was spirited and well played to a near stalemate as the Red Roos led the Blue Roos at the halftime break by a score of 2.3(15) to 2.2(14), thanks to goal by Damian Serong kicking a 40-yard goal after as the halftime siren sounded.

The second half opened up a lot more with clean, crisp handball passing on both sides and plenty of open space to run in (a virtual paddock as they say). Impressive as well were the several marks taken. In the end, the Red Roos outlasted the Bluee Roos, winning the half 4.4(28) to 1.2(8) and the match 6.7(41) to 3.4(22).

Afterwards, the team headed for the Sportsman's Grille for a relaxing evening as thoughts now looking forward for the 2009 season, one in which the team hopes to claim a third MAAFL championship flag. The opening match is March Saturdsay March 28th, with the game at 2 pm in Elmington Park. See you there!
